MABON RITUAL - OUR METHODOLOGY

SECURING PERMISSION TO PERFORM THE INVESTIGATION

Before an investigation can even happen...someone has to conceive of the idea. Then you must convince a property manager, a property owner, or a responsible party to allow you access and permission to investigate. The road to this investigation was a long one...with many twists and turns.

First, Edward Kann, a Ghost Vigil investigator and our occult advisor suggested the idea of applying our investigation techniques and equipment. He mentioned how hard it might be to earn the trust of a group of pagans/wiccans, but that it would be very interesting to see if we could detect or measure any energies they may gather during their rituals.

Edward looked into finding a group or coven that was interested in participating, but as he predicted, it was a difficult task.

  THE HSA SPIRIT CIRCLE

Months went by, and seemingly out-of-the-blue we were contacted by the
Heartland Spiritual Alliance about conducting a two hour presentation on Ghost Hunting at one of their monthly Spirit Circles. Mark Stinson and Shawn Geabhart of Ghost Vigil Investigations attended the Spirit Circle, and had an amazing time.

The pagans at the Spirit Circle were very engaged in the presentation, and thanks to their many questions, it evolved into an amazing discussion. We were impressed with their openness to the idea of paranormal activity.

After the Spirit Circle, I contacted the organizer, Aislinn Firehawk, and asked her if she knew of any groups that might be interested in allowing us to investigate at one of their pagan/wiccan rituals. She put me in touch with AutumnWolf of the Kansas City Witches Meetup.

KANSAS CITY WITCHES MEETUP

AutumnWolf (Bill) is the organizer of the
Kansas City Witches Meetup. As of this report, it is the 3rd largest Witches Meetup in the country with 490 members! The organization has members from a variety of different paths, and its evident that a lot of thought goes into making everyone feel welcome...regardless of their specific belief system.

It is also an extremely active Meetup group. In the month of September 2006...the Meetup held 11 events. In the month of October there were 10 different events. And its that way every month. And these Meetup events are not the only pagan events in our area. There are several alternative book stores that offer workshops and events, the Heartland Spiritual Alliance, as well as Meetup groups dedicated to drumming and herbalism.

AutumnWolf suggested that we investigate at the Witches Meetup's Samhain Ritual, towards the end of October. He invited me to the July Meetup, so that I could described what Ghost Vigil planned to do during the investigation and what we hoped to find.

Cracking Up...

Jamie King, also from Ghost Vigil, attended this meeting. There were about 50 people present at the meeting. We distributed computer disks with past Ghost Vigil investigation reports on them, and explained our methodology and the tone of our investigations. We answered some questions and we seemed fairly well received.

Due to scheduling conflicts, investigating the Samhain Ritual in late October was not going to work. AutumnWolf, Lord Pegasus, and I exchanged many phone calls and e-mails over the next few weeks, and we concluded that the Mabon Ritual on September 23rd would work well for everyone. Lord Pegasus and I met together, and discussed how the investigation would work. It was decided that Ghost Vigil should come to the next Witches Meetup and explain our intentions in more detail.

Ghost Vigil investigator Mark Stinson attended his 2nd Witches Meetup in August. There were about 50 people at this Meetup as well. We passed our electromagnetic field and temperature measuring equipment around the room, and explained exactly how our investigation would work.

Prior to the investigation, we created the About Wicca, Pagan Terminology, and Meaning of Mabon sections of this investigation report, in order to show Lord Pegasus and AutumnWolf the general tone our investigation report would take.

The process of securing permission to conduct this investigation was one of our most involved. I personally attended four different meetings, read three books, sent scores of e-mails, and had innumerable telephone conversations. But the actual investigation, the knowledge we gained, and the friends we made were more than worth it.

An investigation methodology involves two elements...(1) the overall approach and philosophy of the investigators and (2) the specific steps taken during the investigation. For this investigation, we are

OVERALL APPROACH AND PHILOSOPHY OF THE INVESTIGATORS

There were slight differences in the approaches that Shawn Geabhart, Mark Stinson, Jamie King, Edward Kann, Jon Filer, Trish Felix, Michelle Kelley, and Dave Bryant individually brought to the investigation of an Pagan Mabon Ritual and the surrounding activities at Gaea Retreat. But one thing remained very consistent...

We were constantly searching for a natural explanation for anything that happened that appeared to be out-of-the-ordinary. For something to be considered paranormal, all natural explanations must be examined and excluded as possibilities. There were some great examples of this methodology during this investigation.

  • Prior to both rituals, we took baseline EMF readings in the area of the ritual circle. Since the rituals were happening in the middle of a clearing at the top of a ridge in a rural area, we were fairly confident there were no permanent sources of electromagnetic fields present (i.e. buried power conduit, powerlines, electronic appliances, etc.) And our baseline readings were 0 mG. But we did discuss the fact that once people were gathered into the circle, they would possibly be bringing with them devices that generate EMF (i.e. cell phones, PDA's, Blackberries, etc.) We resolved that if we did detect EMF levels above 0 mG during the ritual, we would need to confirm an absence of these personal electronic devices. See the Equipment Readings section of this investigation report for details.

  • Our temperature readings changed by several degrees each time a ritual began. On the one hand, more people and thus more sources of body heat were present once the rituals began. But on the other hand, we were in a large open area at the top of a tall ridge...with a breeze blowing at almost all times. In addition Shawn took his temperature readings 7 to 10 feet away from the people participating in the ritual. We then had to consider the idea that perhaps warmer weather and warmer breezes just happened to coincidental blow in just as both rituals began. AutumnWolf added a magical twist to this idea by asking, "By what other means besides the weather would a pagan ritual alter the temperature?"

  • When we heard the stories of "Fairy" pictures being taken at the area of Gaea Retreat called the Fairy Gate, we immediately asked what kinds of photos they were talking about. When we heard they had captured both "orb" photos and glowing white shapes that appeared to have legs, arms, and wings...we resolved to take our own pictures at the location. Based on some photographic research we had done, we felt we could attribute natural causes to both the orb photos and the glowing white "fairy" shapes. But first we had to capture these two photographic anomalies for ourselves...and we did. See the Fairy Gate section of our investigation report for details.

So while we all differed a little in our approach or motivations, our standards and scientific approach were consistent throughout the investigation.

As we gathered evidence, every piece of evidence or reported activity had to be put into context and evaluated in relation to the rest of the evidence or reported activity. This is something we will do on all our investigations.

SPECIFIC STEPS TAKEN DURING THE INVESTIGATION

Our investigations usually occur at historic locations, such a large museums, mansions, etc...or at private homes or cemeteries where paranormal activity has been encountered. This investigation was completely different. Our mission was to take equipment normally used to investigate hauntings, and apply that equipment to a living, active, ritualistic event. Could our equipment measure whatever energies the ritual participants were attempting to gather and direct? Could we conduct an investigation of this nature and maintain our science-based approach? This is the plan we created and how we followed it during the investigation:

  • First we learned as much as we could about pagan/wiccan beliefs prior to the investigation. We read books, did we research, and met with pagans to discuss their beliefs.

  • Lord Pegasus encouraged us to include at least two investigators in the rituals to provide us with anecdotal reports of what they experienced emotionally and physically during the rituals.

  • We took equipment readings of electromagnetic field and temperature levels before, during, and after both rituals. We hoped to identify any changes the occurred in either of these equipment readings.

  • We were unable to take photographs or record video during the first ritual. But during the second ritual we took photographs with and without the camera flash, and recorded night-shot video the entire duration of the ritual and afterwards.

  • In an impromptu fashion we allowed ourselves to be taken to the Fairy Gate in an attempt to recreate the "Fairy" photos that are reported to be taken there. Though we anticipated being able to capture and naturally explain these photos, we still used our electromagnetic field detectors while on our night-hike to the Fairy Gate.

We are very grateful to Lord Pegasus, AutumnWolf, Aislinn Firehawk, the members of Kansas City Witches Meetup, the Heartland Spiritual Alliance, and the staff of Gaea Retreat for allowing us this opportunity. We felt like we were among friends the entire time. We can only hope that our analysis and our investigation report are worthy of their welcoming trust.
