Vaile Mansion was completed in 1882 for Harvey and Sophie Vaile.  This Mansion d'Or would be the scene of Sophie's untimely death and the last years of Colonel Vaile's life.  It would later serve for many years as a heath care facility and retirement home.  Vaile Mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places.  The property is owned by the City of Independence, and maintained and operated by the Vaile Victorian Society.  The beautiful gothic structure is thought of as one of the most haunted places in the Kansas City area...
